Most veterinarians suggest twice a week brushings. When brushing teeth, use baking soda or a special toothpaste formulated for dogs, not toothpaste for humans. Pet toothpastes contain enzymes that help dissolve plaque and can be swallowed. They also taste good.
The hardest part of dog teeth care is ... starting. But once it becomes a routine, you'll see that it's not difficult and does not take a lot of time.
Start by using a piece of dampened gauze on your finger, and then graduate to the toothpaste and toothbrush.
If you give your dog too much soft food, then there will probably be more tartar, so try and balance its diet.
Feeding a dry food and hide-chew will also help to reduce the incidence of dental disease.
Go to the vet if you see your dog has swollen gums or wounds inside the mouth, if it has a broken tooth or if it drools excessively, or with blood, it might be tooth decay.
